A quiet reflection on what happens when your heart moves faster than reality.

🌍 From Overview to Powerlessness — and Back to Fluency

When astronauts look back at Earth from orbit, they experience something that language can barely hold.
They stop seeing borders.
They stop seeing noise.
They see rhythm — one living, breathing system.

That moment is called the Overview Effect.
It changes how they perceive everything that once felt separate.

Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell described it best:

“You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation,
an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world,
and a compulsion to do something about it.
From out there on the Moon, international politics look so petty.”

But here’s the hidden side of that story:
when astronauts return to Earth, many fall into a deep quiet — even grief.
As William Shatner said after returning from space in 2021:

“It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered.
The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness.”
